Dedicated to Finding Value as well as Beauty!
This work is from the Divine Comedy Suite, and it is woodcut #6 from the Inferno. It is entitled “Cerberus” and it captures the image of the mythological figure who was charged with guarding the gates of Hades. Dali has depicted this three-headed dog figure as a horse whose intimidating presence would surely frighten away even the most intrepid invader. Please note Dali’s classic surrealistic convention that is fully at work in this wonderful print. The animal is shown rearing up on his hind legs; his front paws are powerful and imposing. The fires of Hades are suggested by the flash of red shown in the left hand corner of the print and a solitary figure in black completes this haunting work. The coloring is exquisite. The flash of the hot red hue in the corner shocks the rich black images of the animal and the figure.
This print is signed in the block and it also bears the embossed signature of the printmaker Jean Estrade whose rendition of the Divine Comedy suite is in great demand. The frame on this work is simple yet tastefully elegant. The frame is made of gilt colored wood, and a subtle double matte accents the print beautifully. The framed image measures 15.5” by 12” and the print itself is 11” by 9.5”. The condition of the frame and the print is excellent. We can offer this amazing work from one of the past century’s greatest artist for $925.00.
