This wedding gown was purchased from the daughter of the bride. A lovely wedding gown that was worn by Matilda Allison on her wedding day in 1910 when she married her sweetheart, Henry. Pictures of Matilda in her gown are shown with pictures of the dress.
The one piece dress with back closure is made of cotton lace and cotton netting. The tie at the bodice is silk. The high fitted neckline is made of entirely of lace. This lace is over embroidered cotton lace on illusion net, with an inset of floral cotton lace edged with scalloped cotton lace. The neck has boning to hold it upright and closes with hook and eye closures.
The lower neckline lace is edge with a triple row of illusion netting that is closely gathered to form tight ruching. On either side of the ruching are wide collars. These are made of sheer netting that is closely tucked and edged with the floral cotton lace and edged with scalloped cotton lace.
The under bodice is a double layer of netting forming a "pigeon breast." This netting is covered with a faux vest. The vest made of the same laces used on the collar. This two part "vest" covers the bodice netting.
The 3/4 sleeves are set in at the shoulder. The upper arm is made of netting with multiple rows of very fine tucks. The mid arm has an inset of the floral lace, edged with scalloped lace. The lower arm is sheer netting, edged with three rows of ruching.
The waistline is made of the same lace as the edging on the collar and skirt. The double layer, semi full "bell" shaped skirt is made with the top layer cut to expose the bottom layer. The top skirt is made with netting, an inset of lace with mitered corners. Then it is edged with the same lace used on the bodice. The under layer of the skirt has an inset of the scrolled lace with three rows of tucks below.
Please see all the pictures for details. I have given many views to show the intricate beauty of this piece. The original under slip is long gone. I have shown the dress with a half slip of similar size and volume. (not included)
Condition is excellent. This dress is very strong. The fabric is fresh with above excellent color. The white silk tie shows some wear, but is not split. There are no split seams or shattering of the dress itself. (thank goodness for cotton)!
Important notes: there is a light spot at the back waist about the size of a quarter. There are some holes at the center front of the skirt just above the hem. There are some half dozen smaller holes on the under layer skirt. Most important are scattered dark spots at the hemline, center back. These lightened with soaking and could lighten further with more careful hand soaking.
Measurements in inches: bust 30, waist 23, hip up to up to 36, across upper back 14, sleeve from shoulder to hem is 14, center back to hem 56 & 1/2 inches. This was designed to show her lovely wedding shoes. This is a small size and the new Mrs. Allison was a petite young woman. A disc with jpg pictures of the bride and her groom will be included with this purchase.
