However, unlike the gems of my youth, the mica stone in these earrings has been beautifully polished and shaped to bring out its best colour. I wrapped the stones with sterling silver wire and ended them with a centred spiral. A 4mm jasper stone dangles below, adding some flair and movement.

There are some 30 varieties of mica, which forms in rocks in sheets of flaky crystal that become intermixed with other minerals. In these earrings, the mica stone is reddish brown, with flecks of green-grey and brown. It is the mica that gives the stones their shimmer.

The earrings hang 30mm (1-1/4 inches) from sterling silver earwires I handcrafted. If you prefer traditional earwires or leverbacks, these can be substituted at no additional cost.
