Old Oval Glass Scenic Paperweight

This pretty oval paperweight dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, and likely sat on a lady's desk.

The clear glass encases a scene of what looks like a "girl's day out". A coach is harnessed with two matched pairs of horses, held in check by the uniformed driver. Mother patiently stands beside the coach as three young girls climb aboard. Then it's off for a day of shopping and sightseeing in the nearest town!

The heavy glass slab is 5 inches long, 2 1/2 inches wide, and 3/4 of an inch deep. It has no chips, cracks or scratches. Most of the original felt remains on the bottom. The picture inside was applied, decoupage style, to the painted underside, which has a foil-like appearance. The image is quite detailed, from the features of the characters to the stripes, frills and flounces on their dresses, in soft pastel shades of pink, violet and blue.
